Hindu married women will observe Karva Chauth, the festival for the long life of their husbands, on Sunday with the Moon expecting to rise around 8.14 PM.
Karva Chauth symbolizing the unbreakable bond between married couples falls on the fourth auspicious day of the month of Kartik, every year. “The moon is expected to rise after 8.14 (39 secs) PM,” said Dehradun-based Pt Khushiram Maithani.
On this day, the women keep a day long fast and refrain from drinking water. After the moon sighting, women break their fast by drinking water and later take sumptuous variety of food items with family members. They wear colourful and trendy clothes usually red outfits to bring the essence of the occasion. They wear lots of bangles and heavy makeup items to bedazzle their husbands.
In the evening, women sit in circles at a sacred place to rotate karva-plates and listen to the pious Veeravati story. The Veeravati story is very special. According to the legend, Veeravati , a sister of seven brothers lost her husband as she was made to believe that the moon has risen when it was not. Actually Veeravati’s brothers had ignited fire around the mountain to show that the moon has risen and forced their sister to drink water and eat food. After this, Veeravati heard a bad news about the demise of her husband. Later, she kept the fast and brought back her husband to life.
