The prices of tomatoes continued to soar in the retail markets of Dehradun touching Rs 100 per kg in the festival season.

Experts said unseasonal rains especially in Maharashtra have contributed to the rise of prices of tomatoes. Traders said the prices of onions are also expected to jump in coming days. “Right now you can buy onions at Rs 70 per kg. But shortly, prices may increase,” a trader at a Dehradun mandi said.
The retail prices of essential vegetables such as tomato and onion have almost doubled in the last two months.

“In one month time, the prices of the two essential vegetables have almost doubled,” said Sushil Kumar, a vegetable Vendor.

The prices of various vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, lady-finger, brinjal have seen substantial increase in the last one month.

Last year, the prices of tomato have zoomed to Rs 300-350 per kg in Dehradun.

Meanwhile, congress leaders have condemned the hefty increase in the prices of vegetables saying it would adversely affect the people especially the poor.

“There are two big factors for the increase of prices of vegetables – the monsoon season is ending and other being the coming festival season beginning next month,” said a trader in the whole-sale market in Dehradun.
