IAF rescue foreign women mountaineers in Uttarakhand (updating)

After battling two days of bad weather, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Sunday rescued two foreign women mountaineers, who were missing near Chaukhamba peak-III in Uttarakhand since Thursday.

An IAF cheetah helicopter, which was sent in the morning, located the two foreigners — Michele Theresa (US) and Favgane Manners (UK) near the peak at a height of 17400 feet and managed to airlift them. The chopper later brought the two trekkers to Jyotirmath where they were greeted by senior army officials. “The rescue was remarkable coordination in extreme conditions,” IAF said. The IAF on X said the rescue operation was done due to collaborative efforts of some French mountaineers, SDRF and NIM in the rescue operation.

After getting information from the Chamoli district administration, a specialized high altitude rescue team of SDRF had also launched a ground rescue operation on Saturday and established a base camp also.

The two women lost trek when they were trying climb Chaukhamba-III peak in Chamoli district on Thursday.

After coming to Jyotirmath, the women trekkers were taken to a hospital for medical checkup.
