Two more drown in Ganga, six in one week alone

There seems to be no end to the drowning incidents in the Ganga near Rishikesh and Haridwar areas in Uttarakhand.

In a new incident, two youths were swept away in the Ganga at Shivpuri area near Rishikesh on Sunday morning, police said. The two youths, who hail from Delhi, have been identified as Akash (23) and Sandip (23). The two youths have come to Shivpuri along with two more friends.

In the morning, all the four stated taking bath in the Ganga. However, both Akash and Sandip were swept away in the fast currents of the river and disappeared. A search operation has been launched by the SDRF.

On Monday last, two sisters were drowned in the Ganga at Gita Kutir Ashram near Haridwar when they tried to save the life of their brother.

Two youths from Pauri district were drowned on Sept 15 near Lakshman Jhula area in the Ganga.

Top police officials said the people usually ignore warning signboards on various places near Ganga. “There are some people who start taking bath in the Ganga without realizing that its currents are very fast and the river is very deep,” said an SDRF official.
