Two sisters were swept away in the swollen Ganga river near Haridwar in Uttarakhand when they were trying to save their younger brother from drowning in the river on Monday, police said.

The incident occurred at Geeta Kutir Ghat near Haridwar where six members, mostly children, of two families from Harikalanpur area in Dehradun district have gone to take bath in the Ganga to enjoy the school holiday.

As the children started taking bath in the flooded river, Sakshi (15) and Vaishnavi (13) saw their younger brother Suraj (9) caught in the fast currents of the river. In the desperate bid to save their brother, both the sisters disappeared in the fast currents after managing to save the life of Suraj.

A team of SDRF immediately started a rescue operation in the river. However, both the sisters could not be found.

“This is a very sad incident. Someone present in the Ghat has warned the family members not to take bath in view of the floods in the Ganga. But the children remained adamant saying they wanted to enjoy the holiday,” said a police inspector who is investigating the case.
