Three persons were feared dead in different incidents as heavy rains on Friday continued to lash Kumaon and many other parts of Uttarakhand.
The met department has issued red alert for heavy rains that lashed most parts of the hill state with many places were flooded in Champawat and Udhamsingh Nagar districts in Kumaon region.
Met department said nearly 150 MM of rains was recorded in Kumaon region in the past 24 hours. Kumaon has received 260 MM of rains on Thursday. One person was swept away in the swollen Kailash river in Sitarganj area of Udhamsingh district in Kumaon. Two women were buried in the two different incidents in Lohaghat area of Champawat district in Kumaon.
Dehradun continued to experience intermittent rains since Thursday even as the district authorities closed all schools as precautionary measure due to the met office’s warning of red alert.
The higher reaches of Garhwal experienced the second spell of snowfall. “We have received information that the higher reaches (above 5000 meter) of Uttarakhand have received snowfall again,” said Rohit Thapliyal, scientist at Dehradun Met centre.
The temperature continued to plummet in Dehradun on Friday with Maximum temperature falling to 24.8 degree C, a steep drop of 9.4 notches since Thursday which was -5.3 degree C departure from normal temperature. The minimum temperature in Dehradun also fell to 21.7 degree C. In the hill resort of Mussoorie and other hilly areas, many people took out woolen clothes.
Barring stray incidents of landslides in some places, the government claimed that the main national highways including Rishikesh-Badrinath road were opened for traffic.
However, most of the rivers including Ganga were flowing near danger mark at various places including Haridwar.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami went to the state emergency operation centre (SCOC) at IT Park in Dehradun to take stock of the situation in the state in view of heavy rains.
