Five Kedarnath pilgrims were killed and three injured as landslides hit Munkatiya area in Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, police said on Tuesday.
A couple of people were stilled trapped as the landslides triggered by heavy rains occurred on Monday evening at Munkatiya between Sonprayag and Guarikund areas, the foothills of Kedarnath.
The SDRF personnel launched rescue operation and were digging debris with the help shovels and other equipments to find the survivors trapped in the debris. “We are cautiously digging debris as we believe there are some people who are still trapped,” an SDRF official said. While one body was recovered on Monday night, four more bodies were retrieved on Tuesday morning.
All the three injured persons have been rushed to nearby hospitals. The pilgrims were from Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and other areas of the country.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief over the landslides and said the government was providing all help for the rescue operation.
