Helicopter breaks into pieces at Kedarnath, no loss of life

An empty helicopter belonging Kestrel Aviation which was being airlifted by another MI-17 chopper fell near Mandakini river in Kedarnath area in Uttarakhand and broke into pieces on Saturday morning.

The helicopter was being taken for repair to Gauchar airport in Chamoli district from Kedarnath when the incident occurred.

The crash occurred when the MI chopper started losing balance due to excessive weight and heavy windy conditions, police said.

The helicopter had developed some technical snag on May 24 and made an emergency landing at Kedarnath area. Since then, it was stationed at Kedarnath.

An SDRF team reached the spot where the helicopter fell and cordoned off the area.
