Uttarakhand Mahila Congress workers on Tuesday held protest demonstration in Rudrapur, the district headquarters of Udham Singh Nagar against the rape and murder of a nurse and sexual exploitation of minor girls by a Maulvi in a madrasa.

The women workers were, however, stopped from marching towards the office of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Rudrapur where they were not allowed to cross barricades. The demonstration was held under the leadership of State Mahila Congress President Jyoti Rautela.

Recently, an alleged rape and murder of a nurse working in a private hospital rocked Rudrapur. A Maulvi teaching in a madrasa in Rudrapur was arrested recently after he showed minor girls some porn videos to get sexual favours.

Later, Rautela condemned these incidents and said the demonstration was done in protest against the increasing incidents of crimes against women. She alleged that the police were not taking these incidents seriously.

Later, state Congress president Karan Mahara alleged that the male policemen beat some women workers with lathis and misbehaved with them. In a post on social media, Mahara said ‘this has once again exposed the ugly face of Uttarakhand Police in front of the public. “In such a situation, how can it be believed that women will get security in the state,” he asked.
