US storms to top in Paris

After a see-saw battle, US moved to top position in the medal tally bagging 40 gold medals and 44 silvers on the closing day of the Paris Olympics on Sunday.

After remaining on top for some days, China came second winning 40 gold medals and 27 silvers followed by Japan in third place with 20 gold medals and 12 silvers.

Australia with 18 gold medals and 19 silvers stood on the fourth position. The hosts France emerged on fifth position with 16 gold medals and 26 silvers. Netherlands is now on sixth position with 15 gold medals and 7 silvers.

India was pushed down further to 71st position as it failed to win more medals in last two days. Pakistan was also pushed down to 62.

A decision by CAS on wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s appeal to award her silver medal will be pronounced on August 13.
