Heavy rains continuing in UK, mother, daughter killed

A mother and her daughter were killed as heavy rains continued to pound Uttarakhand (UK) triggering more floods and landslides that forced the authorities to close schools in Dehradun for the second consecutive day on Saturday.

A woman and her daughter were killed in Budha Kedar area of Tehri district after their house collapsed in landslides following overnight heavy rains, police said. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel rushed to the spot to launch the rescue operation. Later SDRF personnel recovered the two bodies of Sarita Devi (40) and her daughter Ankita (15).

The Ganga and its tributaries including Alaknanda  were flowing above danger level at many places including Rishikesh.

The SDRF personnel on Friday rescued 106 stranded people at Gondar village in Madmaheshwar area in Rudraprayag district after a bridge washed away in a swollen river.

A helicopter took several sorties to airlift the stranded people, SDRF personnel said.

A couple of cloudbursts occurred at Yamunotri  area in Uttarkashi district and Sama Paniyali village in Bageshwar district triggering floods and landslides on Friday. Some buildings were damaged near Yamunotri shrine area early on Friday following a cloudburst that triggered heavy floods in Yamuna river.

In Bageshwar, a couple of houses were buried in landslides following a cloudburst in Sama Paniyali village.

However, there was no report of any loss of life in the state.

In Dehradun, schools remained closed for the second consecutive day on Saturday after the met department predicted warning of heavy rains which lashed the city since last night.
