Twenty one schools in Dehradun on Friday adopted new staggered timings to help improve the traffic congestion in the city enforced by the Uttarakhand police.
“We have changed the timings of some schools to improve the traffic system in Dehradun,” said Karan Singh Nagnyal Inspector General (IG) Garhwal range.
Most of these schools from Play-level to 12th class in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, would now open between 7 to 9 AM and close between 12 to 1.45 PM, the new schedule issued by the city police said.
Nagnyal said the SSP Dehradu Ajai Singh had conducted a survey which found that 21 cluster of schools were creating traffic problems. In order to improve the traffic system in Dehradun, the timings of these schools were changed, he said.
The study showed nearly 12000 vehicles ply daily for the pick and drop facilities for students studying in these schools.
Manju Rautela, a teacher of St Joseph’s Academy (SJA) welcomed the move in the larger interest of Dehradun city. “We are ready to support any change that will improve the traffic system,” she said.
After dropping his daughter Vaishnavi at the Summer Valley School at 7 AM, Rajendra Badoni, a Bajaj Alliance employee, expressed optimism that the new timings of the school would improve the traffic system in Dehradun.
“Definitely, we welcome any such move which improves the environment of Dehradun. I hope the vehicular traffic will be streamlined now which also means that there will be less pollution in the city,” said Anoop Nautiyal, an environmentalist.
