The opposition India alliance on Saturday won ten seats in the byelections for the state assemblies in seven states, the results for which were declared on Saturday. The BJP could win only two seats.

After suffering a white-wash in the parliamentary elections held recently in Uttarakhand, Congress candidate Lakhpat Batola wrested Badrinath seat by beating his nearest BJP rival Rajendra Bhandari. Bhandari had quit Congress and joined BJP before the parliamentary elections. In Manglaur, Congress candidate Kazi Nizamuddin won the seat.

Congress, which performed badly in Lok Sabha polls in Himachal Pradesh, won two seats. BJP could win only one constituency in the state.

Mamta Banergee-led Trinamool Congress continued its good performance winning all the four seats in West Bengal. In Bihar, an independent candidate won against the ruling Janata Dal (United) in Rupauli seat.

In Madhya Pradesh, Congress, after taking initial lead, lost to BJP in Amarwara. AAP candidate won in Jalandhar West in Punjab. DMK won from Vikravandi seat in Tamil Nadu.

Buoyed by the superb performance, Uttarakhand Congress Chief Karan Mahra gave credit to party leaders Rahul Gandhi for constantly “exposing” the BJP in all spheres. “They (BJP) are exposed in everything. They tried to create bad blood in the secular fabric of the country. The attacks by both Rahul Gandhi and Khadge ji  (against BJP) have created a new atmosphere in favour of Congress among the people,” Mahra said.
