Amid continuing rains in Uttarakhand, two pilgrims from New Delhi were swept away and 35 others were stranded after a wooden bridge collapsed in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand on Thursday.

The incident occurred in the evening on the Gangotri-Gaumukh trek where a culvert built on a nullah got damaged due to the rising water following which two pilgrims from Delhi swept away.

The pilgrims have been identified as Suraj and Monu, who were residents of Delhi.

Uttarkashi District Magistrate Meherban Singh Bisht has asked the forest department to search for the two missing people and ensure the safe evacuation of 35 other pilgrims who are stranded in the area. He has instructed to immediately construct an alternative bridge over the nullah.

Meanwhile, rains continued to lash across the hill state with water level in rivers and rivulets continuing to rise. In most parts of the state, light to moderate rains were recorded, said Bikram Singh, Director Met office in Dehradun.

The Met department has issued red alert in Kumoan region for heavy rains and orange alert in Dehradun in the next 1-2 days. Dehradun recorded 45-46 mm of rains on Thursday, said Singh.
