Rains accompanied by a high speed dust-storm on Wednesday put an end to the prolonged heat-wave conditions in Dehradun and other areas in Uttarakhand, said the Met Centre.

Worsened by factors like climate change, Dehradun has experienced a record-breaking heat wave spell this summer where the temperature hovered around 40-43 degree C for a very long period. And today’s rains in the capital came after a gap of nearly 18 days.

Triggered by the western disturbances, the rains which began in the evening brought the temperature considerably down giving much needed respite to the people from the heat wave in Dehradun and other areas in the state. Though the maximum temperature rose to 40.7 degree which was 7.1 degree above normal in Dehradun in the afternoon, the weather turned pleasant in the evening as strong winds started blowing in the capital at a speed of 80 kmph. Several trees were also uprooted in the storm.

“From today onward, we will not experience any heat wave in Uttarakhand,” said Bikram Singh, Director Met Centre Dehradun. He said the state would experience pre-monsoon showers from June 23 and the monsoon is expected to arrive in the hill state by June 26-27. “Pre-monsoon showers are likely to hit Kumaon region on June 23. The main monsoon showers are expected to arrive in the state by June 26-27,” Singh said.

A leading TV channel said at least 30 people have died in Ghaziabad alone due to heat wave conditions in the past few days.

Significantly, the met department’s prediction of Wednesday’s rainfall was accurate.
