Uttarakhand Chief Secretary Radha Raturi on Friday asked the police to start taking punitive action from Saturday against the people whose vehicles are illegally parked on the roads.
The strong instructions came at a high-level meeting of the top police officials including DGP Abhinav Kumar at the state secretariat which was presided over the Chief Secretary.
The CS has instructed the police to launch a campaign from Saturday to improve the traffic system in Rishikesh, Lakshmanjhula, Muni ki Reti, Tapovan and Srinagar before the start of Chardham Yatra. This campaign will also be run concurrently in Dehradun from Saturday.
Chairing the meeting on traffic management with the top police officials, Raturi has directed the District Magistrates to send long-term proposals for the better traffic management and also take short-term steps in this regard immediately.
Regarding the problem of illegal parking of vehicles parked on the roadside in Rishikesh and the traffic jam caused by it, the Chief Secretary has directed to make arrangements for parking for tourist vehicles near rafting sites and camping in Rishikesh. She has also given instructions to make parking arrangements on private land. The Chief Secretary has instructed the officials that the tendency of parking vehicles on the roads should not be tolerated under any circumstances and strict and immediate action should be taken against it. Along with this, action will also be taken against such hotel and restaurant owners who are not making proper parking arrangements for their employees and customers and are promoting illegal parking on the roads.
CS has also given instructions to run a campaign against encroachment on the roads. To deal with the problem of traffic jam at various places, Raturi has instructed to immediately send proposals for widening of various narrow roads including the Neelkanth road. The Chief Secretary said for the convenience of Chardham pilgrims, it is very important to improve traffic management before the beginning of the Yatra on May 10. She has also instructed the District Magistrates to work on the proposals for alternative routes of Chardham Yatra.
