One held in Paltan Bazar fire incident, traders angry

The Uttarakhand police on Friday nabbed the person, who set a Paltan Bazar store on fire, from Muzaffarnagar area in Uttar Pradesh. He has been identified as Arun Kalra, a native of Govindgarh in Dehradun, a day after the incident.

Preliminary investigations showed that there was some money dispute between Kalra and owner of the Garment store Omjee Wools.

“On the basis of CCTV cameras and other evidences, we came to know that Arun Kalra was absconding from his house in Dehradun after the fire incident. So, we nabbed Arun Kalra from Muzaffarnagar today,” said SSP Dehradun Ajai Singh.

Meanwhile, the fire incident at the garment store has sent shocks among the business community in Paltan Bazar.

On the other hand, the Uttarakhand police is likely to review its policing system in Dehradun focusing more on increasing the night patrolling.

A fire broke out in the three-story garment shop in Paltan Bazar shortly after midnight on early Thursday. All the garments kept inside the Omjee Wools shop and inside the godown were completely gutted.

Top police officials remained tightlipped on the issue, police sources admitted that there was some laxity in police patrolling in the city especially in nights. “You can’t have police personnel deployed everywhere. But we will see what we can do to ramp up patrolling especially during nights,” a top police official said.

Police initially said short-circuit appeared to be the reason behind the fire. An assessment is being made about the loss of goods in the fire. But later CCTV cameras showed that a suspicious man came on a scooter at night and sprinkled patrol to set the shop on fire.

A host of traders expressed anger over the fire incident at Paltan Bazar and demanded tight security after the incident.  “We have asked the police to set up a police booth also for better patrolling in the bazaar,” said Santokh Nagpal, President of the Paltan Bazar Vyapar Mandal.  “When it comes to controlling crime in Dehradun, police has left this job on the mercy of the god,” said Baljinder Singh of Gaylord Showroom in Paltan Bazar.

Senior Vice President of the Uttarakhand Congress Suryakant Dhasmana visited Paltan Bazar area on Friday and demanded stern action against the police officials, whose negligence led to the Paltan Bazar fire incident after President Droupadi Murmu’s  visit to Dehradun. Earlier, when the President had visited Dehradun on Nov 9, the Reliance Jewels robbery had taken place, he said.
