A big fire broke out in a foam and mattress godown at Chunabhatta locality in Dehradun on Monday, police said.
However, no one was injured in the fire, police said.
The fire which broke out in the afternoon was brought under control only after 3-4 hours with the fire service pressing 8-10 fire tenders to extinguish it, said Suresh Chand, Fire Station officer (FSO) Dehradun.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that short-circuit could be the cause behind the fire which occurred due to the overloading of the electricity system, Chand said.
Goods worth Rs 50 lakh were gutted in the fire. “This is our preliminary estimate,” said Kundan Ram SO Raipur police station.
A couple of fire tenders of ONGC and DRDO were also pressed into service. Police said the oxygen cylinders which were kept inside the godown did not explode in the fire. Otherwise, the devastation caused by the fire could have been enormous, Chand said.
