Candidates remain busy in religious functions, road shows, rallies on last day

Polling on April 19 for all five LS seats in Uttarakhand

At Har-Ki-Pauri, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat on Wednesday organized special puja and took holy dip in the river Ganga as part of his campaign to garner support for his son Virendra, who is facing a tough challenge against former Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat from Haridwar constituency.

“I took a bath at Har-Ki-Pauri along with Haridwar Lok Sabha candidate Virendra,” Rawat said on X as he chanted Har Har Gange.

After a day-long hectic campaigning for their leader, a group of BJP workers had samosa refreshment near 6 no Pulia in Dehradun.  “We have done our job for our leader (Trievendra Singh) Rawat ji. He is winning by a huge margin,” said Sonali Bisht. On the other hand, Rawat remained busy in road shows at Jhabrera and Jawalapur areas of Haridwar.

Similar political scenes were also witnessed in the other parts of Uttarakhand as the electioneering in the hill state where the polling for five Lok Sabha seats will be held in the first phase on April 19 ended on Wednesday evening.

In Tehri constituency, BJP candidate Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah extended her Ram Navmi greetings to the electorate and expressed optimism that the Modi government would return to power with more than 400 seats. Shah also went to the house of Dr Krishna Avatar of Synergy as part of her campaign. Shah’s rival Jot Singh Gunsola remained busy in public contact programmes.

In Pauri, BJP leader Anil Baluni participated in a road show at Nanda Nagar area. He thanked the party workers for actively participating in his campaign. Baluni’s main rival Ganesh Godiyal (Congress) conducted impressive rallies and road shows at Paithani and Pabo areas. Godiyal also greeted people on Ram Navmi.

The electioneering in Uttarakhand for the five Lok Sabha seats has gained momentum in the past one week only. Otherwise the election shrill was missing this time. However, the election remained mainly confined to the mainstream media and social media platforms.

In most of the five seats in the hill state, the contest is straight between the ruling BJP and Congress. In all the constituencies, the candidates mostly relied on rallies and road shows.

In Nainital seat, BJP’s Ajay Bhatt appealed to the people to press EVM button on Lotus for his second term victory. Bhatt also went to Panchmukhi Hanuman temple to offer prayers on the occasion of Ram Navmi. Congress leader Sachin Pilot addressed a big rally at Ram Leela Maidan in Haldwani in favour of the party candidate Prakash Joshi, who is pitted against Bhatt in Nainital.

Ajay Tamta (BJP) who is facing Pradeep Tamta of Congress sought votes on further development of the Almora reserve constituency. Pradeep Tamta is facing Ajay Tamta from Almora for a record fourth time in the Lok Sabha elections. In 2009, Pradeep Tamta won. But after that Ajay Tamta won in both 2014 and 2019.
