The return of Marin

When Carolina Marin defeated P V Sindhu in the Rio Olympics badminton final in 2016, it was one of the most vivid memories of the Spanish shuttler winning a top title. Though she won one or two big more titles including the world badminton championship in 2018, she continued to perform poorly in the top international tournaments after her ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).

Even in the Tokyo Olympics, Marin kept herself out due to the nagging ACL injury.

After so many years, Marin on Sunday won her second All England Open Badminton Championship at Birmigham after her opponent Akane Yamaguchi retired in the second set due to injury in the final match.

This was Marin’s second title of the world’s oldest badminton championship after nine years.  She won her first title in 2015.

Marine was leading 11-1 in the second set after winning the first 26-24 when Yamaguchi retired due to injury. In the first set, it was sea-saw battle between the two great rivals as both the players took leads several times. And several times, the two players were close to winning the first set. It was just a battle of nerves in the first set as both Marin and Yamaguchi displayed their best skills. But in the end, Marin won the set 26-24.

In the second set, Yamaguchi never looked comfortable due to an injury. As the injury prolonged, Yamaguchi called medical assistance. But after two games, she said she would retire from the final game.

After winning the match, Marin knelt to shriek in celebrations. She was also given a warm hug by her mother, who was wrapped in the Spanish flag. This was also seen as a gesture that she is now mentally prepared for the Paris Olympics.

Marine later said she was feeling very proud that she won the prestigious championship. She also wished Yamaguchi fast recovery from the injury.

In her recent interviews, Marin said winning gold at Paris Olympic is still her dream.”Everything was so dark in my mind that Paris 2024 dreams helped her see the light at the end of the tunnel,” she said in the media interview.
