41 trapped, 16 rescue in Mana avalanche (updating)

Forty one labourers were trapped and 16 rescued after an avalanche hit Mana area near Badrinth shrine in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand on Friday.

Chief Secretary Radha Raturi said the rescue operations have been launched to rescue the remaining labourers who were trapped in the avalanche following the continuous heavy snowfall in the area in the past two days. A total of 57 labourers were working being undertaken by the BRO in the area when the avalanche occurred with a frightening speed.

“Army, NDRF and SDRF are engaged in the rescue operation,” Raturi said.

Inspector General (IG) SDRF Riddhim Agarwal said all out efforts have been launched for rescuing the labourers. The injured labourers have been sent to army hospital in Mana, Agarwal said.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed concern over the incident and called for speeding up the rescue operation to save lives of the trapped labourers.
