Forty students escaped unhurt as a Gairsain boarding school was completely gutted in fire in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand early on Thursday.
The fire was so severe that the entire fabricated building of the Rajiv Navodya vidyalay in Gaisain, the summer capital of Uttarakhand, was reduced to ashes.
The police said nearly 40 students were sleeping in the residential school when the fire broke out around 4 AM. All the children were evacuated safely in time and there was no loss of life, police said.
However, beds, quilts, mattresses, sports equipment and all other materials kept in the school were burnt completely.
Students from sixth to twelfth standard are studying in this school run by the state government.
As soon as the information about the fire was received, fire tenders rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control in nearly six hour time.
The police said that preliminary investigation showed that a short circuit was responsible for the fire.
Officials said that 40 children were sleeping in three rooms of the school while another room had store items. As soon as the fire broke out, all the students were safely evacuated by the school administration.
“All the people living in the school including staff members and teachers are safe. No one has suffered any physical harm, injury or damage,” a top police official said.
Proper safety measures were not installed in the school hoste. Regular safety drills should be made mandatory
