In one of the worst accidents in recent years in Uttarakhand, at last 36 people were killed and 27 injured when an overcrowd bus fell into a deep khai in Almora district on Monday, police said.

The accident occurred at Marchula area in the district when the bus carrying 63 passengers was going to Ramnagar town from Kirat area.

Three teams of SDRF rushed to the spot for rescue operation. While 28 bodies were retrieved from the spot, others succumbed to injuries on way to hospitals. All the 27 injured were rushed to hospitals. Three persons in serious conditions were airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh by helicopter.

Significantly, it was also a miraculous escape for five persons who fell out of the bus moments after the accident occurred.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami cancelled his Delhi visit and rushed to the hospitals to see the condition of the injured persons. He also suspended two district officials of the RTO Almora for negligence of duty. He also ordered a magisterial inquiry.

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Expressed grief over the accident.
