In one of the worst terrorist strikes in recent years, 26 people mostly tourists were killed and many injured in Pahalgam in Kashmir Valley on Tuesday.

Most of the TV channels said 26 people were confirmed dead as terrorists fired indiscriminately on a large number of tourists. Two foreign tourists were among those dead. The authorities in the night issued a revised list of 26 persons killed in the attack.  Most of the slain tourists were from different states like Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra.

A picture of a terrified woman sitting next to her slain husband in the area went viral on X and other social media platforms. Another picture showed security forces covering the dead bodies.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the area and began search for the terrorists. Several security vehicles were seen rushing towards the Pahalgam meadows in Anantnag district where the attack took place.

The attack occurred when a group of terrorists opened fire indiscriminately on a large number of tourists with women screaming for help in what appeared to be a targeted attack, TV channels quoting eyewitnesses said.

“They ask the name of my husband and later opened fire on him,” said a wailing young woman. Immediately after the shootout, tourists rushed back to Srinagar. Most of the hotels were deserted after the attack.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident and expressed condolences to those who lost their loved ones. “Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice. They will not be spared,” Modi said on X.

Home Minister Amit Shah flew to Srinagar for a high level meeting to take stock of the situation.
